Thriving first three months for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme

It’s been an exciting three months since the launch of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme, which runs under the banner of The Howden Way, and we are thrilled to report its remarkable success.

Just shy of 500 training sessions have been booked by horse/rider combinations, each benefiting from subsidised sessions delivered by our team of carefully selected, certified coaches who hold Level 3 qualifications or above. This initiative has brought together riders and horses at various stages of their aftercare journey, and the results have been truly inspiring.

The programme has attracted a diverse range of thoroughbreds, from horses that have just come off the racetrack, focusing on essential flatwork, to those further along the path, progressing onto more advanced training such as polework and jumping. It’s been heartwarming to see such a broad spectrum of horses benefit from the tailored training sessions and an extremely fulfilling journey to date.

From high-profile race winners to horses that never made it to the racetrack, the programme has welcomed them all. The environment has been incredibly supportive, with thoroughbreds at similar levels working together, which has helped many thrive. Notably, some horses have gone on to compete in new disciplines, with Allaho—the former Ryanair Chase winner at Cheltenham—proving to be just example of the success stories. He has even qualified for the British Dressage Winter Championships, a testament to the potential of these horses beyond the racetrack.

Justine Parker, Programme Director said of the first three months “We are immensely proud of the progress we've seen and look forward to continuing to support these incredible thoroughbreds as they transition into their new lives, unlocking their full potential with the help of skilled coaching and a nurturing, community-focused environment

“In addition to those that have attended the subsidised training we are also seeing a high number of thoroughbred owners enjoying the free online retraining syllabus which is hosted on our website.”

The syllabus, which is also available as document downloads, along with the footage based content is all available to anyone who has an interest in the retraining of thoroughbreds or wishing to gain a better understanding of what to expect should they decide to make an ex-racehorse their next riding horse of choice.
