We at The Howden Way Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme (TAP) are delighted to announce a major milestone—over 1,000 subsidised training sessions have now been booked and enjoyed by ex-racehorses since our launch just seven months ago.
Delivered regionally by our handpicked Level 3 (or above) certified coaches—each as passionate about thoroughbreds as we are—these sessions have supported horses at every stage of their post-racing journey. From horses just weeks out of training to seasoned second-career stars, every story has shared one common thread: the deep bond and love between these horses and their new owners.
With more than 1,300 registered members and growing daily, TAP continues to provide invaluable guidance and support to those retraining and transitioning thoroughbreds into their new lives as riding horses. In addition to training, members can access a wealth of online video and editorial resources, along with exclusive benefits, competitions, and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities—like parading at Cornbury House Horse Trials this September.
Justine Parker, Programme Director for TAP, shared:
"To have achieved these numbers so rapidly is outstanding. It's been incredibly rewarding to see how enthusiastically the programme has been embraced by thoroughbred owners, riders, and the wider racing industry. We're proud to see the impact of a truly owner-funded initiative across England, Scotland, and Wales."
The programme was proudly launched and funded by David Howden, founder of Howden and Cornbury House Horse Trials, with valued support from our partners: Dodson & Horrell, Harry Hall, Horsequest, and Unibed.
