June Spotlight Award winner is announced

We’re delighted to announce that Jessica Burdess has been chosen as June’s Spotlight Award winner. As part of his award, Jessica wins a uvex exxential 3 riding helmet, courtesy of Zebra Products.

Presented jointly by The Howden Way and British Eventing, the Spotlight Award is a monthly recognition that celebrates individuals who embody the shared values of both organisations. Each month, British Eventing lead coaches are invited to nominate a recipient from their region who has been recognised for their contributions to the eventing community. The winner is then selected by Olympic Gold Medallist, Laura Collett, from a shortlist of contenders.

Coach Will Murray nominated Jessica for the June Spotlight Award on behalf of the Northern region. He said: “Jessica’s mother Sara has ridden round numerous Badmintons and Burghleys, and bred Jessica’s ride Murphy with the hope of one day being Jessica’s pony. He has far surpassed expectations and has amassed 110 BE points competing up to advanced level with Sara and winning multiple working hunter titles around the country and competing at HOYS with several jockeys. He is now acting as school master to 14-year-old Jessica who works incredibly hard, often riding before and after school. The pair jumped double clear round their first 2* at Belsay (1) which is testament to Jessica’s hard work and dedication.”

Laura Collett, who has the pleasure of selecting the winning candidate, said: “Jessica’s story really stood out to me – not just because of her results, but because of the partnership she’s built with Murphy. It’s clear how much love and hard work has gone into their journey. To be riding a homebred horse with such an incredible history, and to already be jumping double clear at your first 2* at just 14, is impressive. Jessica shows real dedication, riding before and after school, and it’s clear she’s making the most of every opportunity. She’s a brilliant example of what this sport is all about – partnership, passion, and perseverance.”

Jessica commented: “I have three horses to event this season, all owned by my nana, Jenny Deary. My main ride, Murphy, show name Tale of Two Shivers, is a 4th generation homebred who my mum produced to Advanced. She always said he was meant to be mine, and I’ve been riding him at home since I was six!

“Last year we were top 10 in the U18 100 Champs on the Northern team and went double clear and top 10 in the 1* at Blair. At 18, Murphy is a horse of a lifetime and he’s helped me progress while having so much fun. I also compete Bear at 100 and Poldory Forget Me Not at 90.

“My main aim this year was Belsay International, our local event, where we went double clear in the 2*. Now I’m aiming for the U18 2* Champs at Bishop Burton, Scone Palace 2*, and Grassroots qualifiers. I also hope to qualify Murphy for HOYS in the show ring.

“The regional BE U18 coaches - Will, Sue and Jane - have been amazing. Their coaching and course walks have really helped me stay focused and I’ve made some brilliant friends through the U18 programme too.

“I was so excited to win the Spotlight Award. I live and breathe for my horses, and it really does make those after-school, dark, windy nights worth it! I’m in Year 9 at Durham Cathedral School, and I’m really grateful for how supportive they’ve been with my training and competing nationally.”
