Between the 11 – 12 March, Tier 1 riders of the Howden Way Rider Talent Academy and the Young Horse Academy cohort had the invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in top-level training sessions.
The training camp brought together the group of talented riders who worked with a team of renowned coaches to and strengthen already existing talent and understanding of the sport.
Flatwork was led by three coaches: Emma Winter, Kylie Roddy, and Gill Watson. Each coach brought their unique expertise, helping riders enhance their position, balance, and communication with their horses. In showjumping, riders had the opportunity to work with Philip Surl, whose clear and constructive guidance provided them with a deeper understanding of the technical aspects of a course. Cross-country lines were held with coach Chris Bartle which allowed riders, under his guidance, to focus on how best approach different types of fences and lines they may meet on course.
The two-day camp was further enriched by the presence of veterinary and physiotherapy experts Spike Milligan and Emma Dainty, whose contributions provided riders with comprehensive insights into equine health and performance optimisation. Spike also engaged with riders during an evening educational session when he gave a talk on the importance of tailored training programmes to enhance performance and minimise risk of injury.
Justine Parker, Programme Director of The Howden Way said “This is an exceptional group of athletes – not only are they incredibly talented, but they also embody humility, diligence, and an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. Their drive to seize every opportunity for learning and growth is truly inspiring. They fully represent the values of The Howden Way, and it's deeply rewarding to have them in the programme. With the support of world-class coaches and experts at the Academies, it's exciting to watch them, along with their horses, progress to new heights in the sport. We're eagerly looking forward to the season ahead with this remarkable group.”
