We’re delighted to announce that Iris Wilcox has been chosen as August’s Spotlight Award winner. As part of her award, Iris wins a uvex exxential 3 riding helmet, courtesy of Zebra Products.
Presented jointly by The Howden Way and British Eventing, the Spotlight Award is a monthly recognition that celebrates individuals who embody the shared values of both organisations. Each month, British Eventing lead coaches are invited to nominate a recipient from their region who has been recognised for their contributions to the eventing community. The winner is then selected by Olympic Gold Medallist, Laura Collett, from a shortlist of contenders.
Coach Jonquil Hemming nominated Iris for the August Spotlight Award on behalf of the Wales and West Midlands region. She said: “Iris’s biggest challenge is remembering the complex, technical movements required in dressage tests – something that does not come easily to her. During her recent final training for the Chillington Youth Championships, Iris showed exceptional perseverance and mental strength during the test training and despite a few errors, Iris completed her first test in a 60m x 20m arena. Her dedication in this training with her positive attitude make Iris a true role model, she overcomes adversity with courage, commitment and heart. Well done, Iris!”
Laura Collett, who has the pleasure of selecting the winning candidate, said: “What really stood out about Iris was her incredible determination and positive attitude. Dressage doesn’t come easily to her, but she tackled it head-on with courage and commitment. To see her push through those challenges and complete her first test in a full-size arena is truly inspiring. Iris is a brilliant example of what hard work and spirit can achieve – she’s a role model for anyone facing obstacles in their riding journey.”
Iris commented: ““Monty and I have been a team for two years now, and I honestly couldn’t ask for a better partner – he’s just the best. Over the years, we’ve consistently qualified for show jumping, hunter trials and national eventing championships through both Pony Club and Riding Club, with lots of championship wins and high placings along the way.
“2025 has been our first season with British Eventing and we’ve had a great run in the U18 80 classes. I was absolutely thrilled to place in the Regional Youth League, and being selected to ride for the Wales and West Midlands U18 team really is a dream come true!
“It’s been brilliant to join the team, meet other young riders, and train with such amazing coaches – their advice and support has been invaluable. The British Eventing community is such a special place to be part of, and I’m really looking forward to continuing our journey next year. We’re aiming to step up to our first U18 90 event at Kelsall in a few weeks, which is really exciting.”
