Train with us

At The Howden Way, we believe every horse and rider deserves the chance to thrive. Our three core programmes that we offer focus on the welfare and training of sport horses and ex-racehorses.  We also invest into the British Eventing Training Fund to enable accessible and subsidised training for grassroots riders, officials, and the driving forward of vital safety initiatives.

Three Unique Training Programmes

The Howden Way opens doors for horses and riders at every stage — from grassroots and elite eventers to ex-racehorses beginning new careers. Through expert coaching, funding, and welfare-led initiatives, we make top-class training and safer sport accessible to all.

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme supports ex-racehorses in their transition to become  riding horses with subsidised training and specialist advice whilst the Rider Talent Academy and Young Horse Academy provide tailored coaching for promising combinations. Grassroots training, as with the training of  officials and coaches,  is invested into by The  Howden Way and delivered by British Eventing, the national governing body for the sport, in collaboration with ourselves.

Thoroughbred aftercare programme

Thoroughbred aftercare programme

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme (TAP) gives riders the knowledge, support, and training they need when taking on an ex-racehorse. Through subsidised regional coaching with carefully selected experts, TAP creates a structured, welcoming environment where both horse and rider can thrive.

By offering year-round support and training, The Howden Way helps more horses transition successfully from racing to riding, giving them bright futures in their second careers. Riders also gain a supportive community, encouraging them to make a thoroughbred their next horse of choice whether it be for leisure riding or competition.

Rider talent academy

Rider talent academy

The Rider Talent Academy supports riders aged 14-28 years within British Eventing, offering top-tier training in addition to helping riders transition successfully to senior competition.

In collaboration with British Eventing, it nurtures talent by providing expert coaching, camps and training sessions in addition to competition support to help riders progress to the next level.

Young horse academy

Young horse academy

The Young Horse Academy supports the development of six, seven and eight year-old horses in British Eventing.

The academy year commences on 1st January and candidates are identified at the Cornbury House Horse Trials in September from their appropriate age championship class. Those candidates are then assessed at ‘Development Days’ prior to being invited to join the academy for a twelve month period commencing in January each year.

The programme includes expert advice from vets, farriers, and nutritionists as well as bespoke training and competition support. The Howden Way also provides funding for Young Horse classes and supports the British Eventing Young Horse Leagues, helping young horses gain experience and exposure.
